Paul J. Stephan Memorial Award
The American Morgan Horse Institute, Inc. encourages excellence in youth by providing scholarships to outstanding young men and women.
The AMHI Paul J. Stephan Memorial Award is made each year in memory of Paul J. Stephan, who bred, trained, and presented fine Morgan horse champions. A talented and devoted horseman, Paul did not come from a privileged family, nor was he raised on a horse. His introduction to Morgan horses and the industry came as a 17-year-old, when he lacked direction in his life. Morgan horses gave him his lifeŐs work, became his passion and his livelihood, and brought him much enjoyment and success. It was his wish to provide a similar opportunity to other young men, encouraging them to further their education and make Morgan horses their lifeŐs work as well.
The AMHI Paul J. Stephan Memorial Award will be awarded to a young man who is interested in working in the Morgan horse industry. The award is open to young men from any state and any financial background. It is not limited to show ring exhibitors, but to young men who hold the goal of active professional involvement with the Morgan breed in any capacity. The award money is to be used as a means of furthering the candidateŐs education in his specific area of interest, and may include such disciplines as: training, judging, equine reproduction, professional grooming, stable management, farrier or specialized shoeing, stable apprenticeship, and equine veterinary studies.
The award is available through the generosity of the Paul J. Stephan Memorial Award Fund. The American Morgan Horse Institute (AMHI) administers the award fund.
The following is a general outline of the AMHI Paul J. Stephan Memorial Award program:
1). One $1000 award is available annually, until the balance of the award is depleted.
2). The award money must be paid within two years after the designation of the award winner. Upon receipt of the award, a written request from the recipient must be made for payment to the designated parties.
3). The program is open to any young man under the age of 21 who is interested in working in the Morgan horse industry.

5). Previous winners of the Paul J. Stephan Memorial Award are ineligible to
