FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Shelburne, VT - The American Morgan Horse Institute (AMHI) is pleased to announce the 2011 educational scholarship recipients. Each award is $3,000. 2011 AMHI Mendonhall/Michele Kimmelman Snyder Memorial Educational Youth Scholarship
Mendonhall, Inc. was founded 29 years ago and is based on the love and caring of the Morgan horse. Robert Veghte and Robin Rednor-Veghte have bred, raised, and shown a small number of Morgans, but have always strived for them to be the best in the division that they are suited for. They have been proud to own and show many champions throughout the years: Whiskey Hill Beau Reve, Particular Red, Merriehill Hooligan, Springmill Sequel, Lamborghini in Black, Diablo in Red and Liberation Starbrite, to name a few. This scholarship will help further a young person’s knowledge and love of the Morgan horse in any discipline.

The recipient of the 2011 AMHI Mendonhall/Michele Kimmelman Snyder Memorial Educational Youth Scholarship is Alyssa Plewacki of North Ridgeville, Ohio. Alyssa is a member of the National Honor Society and Drama Club. Alyssa said she is more confident because of her involvement with horses “by appreciating every positive step, to learning from the bad ones, and not taking for granted anything in between.”
2011 AMHI Cy Tirrell Educational Youth Scholarship
 |
The AMHI Cy Tirrell Educational Youth Scholarship was so designated 15 years ago when the AMHI Board of Trustees named the award in honor of Professor Loring V. Tirrell, an animal husbandry professor at the University of New Hampshire from 1920 to 1966.
The recipient of the 2011 AMHI Cy Tirrell Educational Youth Scholarship is Kellyn Cameron of Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Kellyn is an honor roll student and captain of the varsity basketball team. “Being around horses and seeing what I could do as an equestrian drove me to be successful in equitation, in the classroom, and as a person,” said Kellyn. |
2011 AMHI Graywood Youth Horsemanship Grant
The American Morgan Horse Institute is proud to announce that the recipient of the 2011 AMHI Graywood Youth Horsemanship Grant is Kiele Armstrong of Snoqualmie, Washington.
The AMHI Graywood Youth Horsemanship Grant, available through the generosity of the Graywood Foundation, Inc., provides an opportunity for the recipient to work with a training stable or breeding farm to receive tutelage and to ride or drive quality Morgan horses to acquire skill and knowledge in a “hands on” experience.
Sixteen-year-old Kiele Armstrong began competing in lead line classes when she was five years old. Until last year, her mother has been her trainer. She now competes in dressage with her Morgan, Neverlands Mister Darling, and has a professional trainer. “Without a doubt, dressage is definitely my favorite style of horseback riding. To me, it is art, it is passion, it is poetry, it is dreaming out loud," said Kiele. |

2011 AMHI $1,000 Van Schaik Dressage Scholarship
The American Morgan Horse Institute (AMHI) is proud to announce that Tess Strumwasser of Falmouth, Massachusetts is the recipient of the 2010 van Schaik Dressage Scholarship.
 |
The goal of the van Schaik Scholarship is to support and encourage equestrians of dressage to advance to the fourth level and above. The scholarship honors Dr. H.L.M. van Schaik who worked to preserve the classical art of horsemanship in dressage. To Dr. van Schaik, the classical art utilizes gentleness, psychology, and the horse’s innate qualities to develop a horse that is useful, willing, and correct in his work. |
To preserve and encourage the classical methods Dr. van Schaik promulgated, the AMHI makes an annual award of $1,000 to a Morgan individual wishing to further his or her skill, knowledge, and proficiency in classically-ridden dressage. The scholarship award is used to further the training and education of the recipient. Eligible expenses include instruction, travel, and living expenses directly related to receiving instruction. The recipient attests that he or she will continue to pursue dressage training on a Morgan for the duration of the scholarship.
Tess Strumwasser was successful at the fourth level before she started riding The Legacy of Scotmadison, a Morgan. “Even though he was very green, I felt absolutely safe on him. Yet, at the same time, he was nicely forward and had a super work ethic. These were qualities that I had struggled to find in other breeds,” she said. “If any dressage rider tells me they are searching for a new horse, I always highly recommend that they consider a Morgan,” she added. Tess, a graduate of Smith College, is a working student with Courtney King Dye.
Each year the AMHI is proud to sponsor educational scholarships and grants to Morgan youth nationwide. The van Schaik Scholarship is one of the Institute’s awards.
